Do you have a passion for wine? Would you like to learn about its cultivation and discover its nuances? If you answered yes, then keep reading. Last Friday, we headed to Molins de Rei, a town near Barcelona, to attend a very special wine tasting. The event was led by Natàlia Capdevila, a close friend and wine enthusiast who earned a degree in oenology and has now embarked on this project with Joan, the owner of Vinalum.

Montsant vs Priorat

On this occasion, we aimed to distinguish between these two wine designations: Montsant and Priorat. We tasted four wines, two whites and two reds. Natàlia explained in detail the difference between them and the importance of the terroir in which they are cultivated. The tasting was accompanied by a selection of cheeses and cured meats that enhanced the flavors of each wine.

Montsant: It is a designation of origin (DO) for wines located in the province of Tarragona, in the region of Catalonia, Spain. The area, situated in the northeast of Spain and near the famous Priorat, features a mountainous and diverse landscape that contributes to the uniqueness of the wines. The soils are varied, with the presence of slate, clay, and limestone, adding complexity to the wines.

Priorat: It is a prestigious designation of origin (DOQ) located in the province of Tarragona, in the region of Catalonia, northeast Spain. Priorat is situated in a mountainous region, and the rugged topography and characteristic slate soils, known as "llicorella," are distinctive elements of this wine region.

Montsant and Priorat share certain geographical similarities being located in the same province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain, but they also present notable differences.

The wines we tasted were as follows: red and white wine from Solpost, and the white Gran Clos and red Finca El Puig. Each wine was distinct; Solpost wines were very light, while Gran Clos and Finca El Puig both had much more body. These were different wines that, individually, transported you to unique situations.

Tastings are held every Friday, and you can reserve your spot through Vinalum's Instagram, Joan and Natàlia will welcome you with open arms.
